Science

Science

Science is a Core subject and is therefore studied by all pupils in KS3 and KS4. At KS5 pupils have the opportunity to follow Physics, Chemistry and Biology ‘A’ level courses. The emphasis is on learning through practical work and activities. Pupils are encouraged to improve their Scientific skills as they progress through the school.

KS3

In Yr 7 & 8 pupils are taught a wide variety of Science topics in their Form groups. In Yr 9, classes are set and pupils study Physics, Chemistry and Biology separately. Pupils are assessed by carrying Practical tasks and by Topic tests.


KS4

There is an opportunity for some pupils in KS4 to follow separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology Triple WJEC GCSE courses. They sit 1 examination per subject at the end of Yr 10 and another per subject at the end of Yr 11.  They also complete 1 Practical Examination per subject during Yr 11. This leads to 3 separate GCSE qualifications. Further details can be found at www.wjec.co.uk.


Most pupils follow a WJEC GCSE Science course which leads to 2 GCSE qualifications. They sit 3 examinations at the end of Yr 10 and another 3 at the end of Yr 11. KS5

In Yr 12 pupils who choose to take Science ‘A’ levels follow the WJEC Physics, Chemistry and Biology courses. For each subject pupils sit 2 examinations at the end of Yr 12 and a further 2 at the end of Yr 13.
